A Brief Overview of Marijuana & Addiction
Marijuana is known by many names: Pot, Hash, Cannabis, Weed, Ganja and many other colloquial terms around the world. It has had a long and colorful history being grown and used from China to the Middle East and then to Europe and on to other parts of the world in the age of colonization and beyond.
It is one of the most common drugs in the world and outlawed in many countries with some 'drug lenient' countries like the Netherlands being more flexible in their approach but has been recognized as by nearly all of the world as a drug with consequences.
Marijuana has often been classed as a 'soft drug' and as a 'gateway drug' that leads to more dangerous drug use but has also been labeled as a 'recreational drug' akin to alcohol and that it should be accepted on similar terms. No matter what you opinion in this regard it has been proven to be addictive to many and has been the cause of issues in peoples lives if they let their habit get away from them.
Marijuana is grown from a plant called the Cannabis Sativa which grows flowers that can be broken down into the various forms of Marijuana that are consumed for the psychoactive effects it gives the users. These flowers contain a chemical called tetrahydrocannabinol also known as THC which causes the high that marijuana users experience and that can drive them to become an addictive user and not just a casual user of the drug.
Whether you are for legalization of Marijuana or against it, addiction to the substance can happen and can be very detrimental to a persons health and well being.
